The "Drill & Fist" Evolution
The 2026 release of Maze of Muertos and Burst Protocol has triggered a comprehensive paradigm shift for the Armed Dragon archetype. The introduction of Drill Armed Dragon has completely restructured the deck's economic engine, shifting it from a fragile, linear "Level Up" aggro strategy to a highly resilient, Graveyard-centric combo matrix.
The deck now operates on a new "Trinity" core: Drill Armed Dragon provides un-respondable discard outlets and modular searching; Fist Armed Dragon offers board breaking and extension; and Knight Armed Dragon facilitates immediate OTK pushes. Combined with the unbanned Dragon Rulers and Kashtira engines, Armed Dragon has evolved into a premier contender for the new Genesys Format.
Drill Armed Dragon's discard effect is a cost, not an effect. This means discarding an "Armed Dragon Thunder" monster to activate Drill cannot be stopped by cards like Effect Veiler or Infinite Impermanence, guaranteeing your engine starts.
Drill Armed Dragon can banish Dragons from the GY to search any Dragon with a matching Level. This converts spent resources into specific tools, such as searching Tempest (Level 7) or Knight Armed Dragon (Level 3).
Knight Armed Dragon can Special Summon itself if a Level 5+ Dragon appears. When sent to the GY (e.g., for a Link Summon), it grants a massive ATK boost that cannot be responded to, securing lethal damage through opponent interaction.
The modern standard requiring only 2 cards: Pile Armed Dragon + Armed Dragon Thunder LV7.
Activate Pile Armed Dragon in hand, sending AD Thunder LV7 to GY as cost. Pile summons itself; LV7 triggers in a new chain step to search Drill Armed Dragon or Armed Dragon Flash.
Pile sends AD Thunder LV5 from Deck to GY to boost ATK. LV5 searches Tempest or Dragunity Arma Gram. Now, use Drill Armed Dragon in hand: Discard Tempest (cost) to activate. Tempest searches another WIND Dragon.
Use Drill Armed Dragon's GY effect: Banish 3 cards (including Tempest) to search Knight Armed Dragon. Knight summons itself immediately (since Pile is Lvl 7). You now have material for Rank 7s or Link plays with massive card advantage.
The modern endboard leverages generic Dragon support and Rank 7 access.
| Tactical Metric | Historic Strategy (Pre-2025) | Modern Strategy (2026 Integration) |
|---|---|---|
| Opening Hand Reliance | Heavily dependent on specific combinations; prone to "bricking". | Highly modular; multiple interchangeable starter sequences (Drill, Fist, Pile). |
| Response to Interaction | Turn concludes if Normal Summon is negated. | Pivot extenders bypass field negation; Drill is un-respondable. |
| Graveyard Utility | Functionally non-existent. | Paramount; serves as secondary engine for Drill and Rulers. |
| Lethal Damage Threshold | Required extensive, multi-turn setup to scale into LV10. | Achieved consistently on Turn 2 via Pile + Knight ATK boosts. |
The "Drill" engine facilitates consistent OTK lines, making it a premier choice for ladder climbing. The transition from defensive seals to aggressive LV10 pushes is seamless.
Propelled by the "Armed Dragon Vortex" Skill. This skill allows revealing a LV7 WIND Dragon to add 2 Armed Dragons from Deck to Hand. When paired with Drill, it solves all consistency issues, making it a frequent King of Games (KoG) strategy.
Level 3 / WIND / Dragon
The economic engine. (1) Discards as cost (un-respondable). (2) Banishes from GY to search ANY Dragon with matching Level.
The bridge. Discards to destroy a monster ( < 2400 ATK) and Special Summon a Dragon 2 Levels higher from Deck.
The extender. Summons itself if you control a Level 5+ Dragon. Provides un-respondable +1000 ATK boost when sent to GY.
Essential extender. Discards Level 7s to summon itself, triggering their effects immediately.
Searcher & Recurring Body. Discard with Drill to search; Banish with Drill to search again.
The modern staple. Level 7 body for Xyz plays that replaces itself and removes threats.
| Card | Ratio | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Drill Armed Dragon | 3x | Mandatory Starter / Resource Engine. |
| Fist Armed Dragon | 3x | Combo Bridge / Board Breaker. |
| Knight Armed Dragon | 1-2x | Extender / OTK Tool. |
| Pile Armed Dragon | 3x | Consistency & Extender. |
| Armed Dragon Thunder LV3 | 3x | Primary Starter / Draw Engine. |
| Dragon Rulers | 1-3x | Tempest (Essential), Blaster (Optional). |
The Armed Dragon archetype itself is largely untouched by the TCG banlist, but key synergistic cards it relies on are affected.

The introduction of Fist Armed Dragon (aka Threat Armed Dragon) in the Burst Protocol set fundamentally transformed the archetype. No longer just a linear "level-up" strategy, Armed Dragon evolved into a dynamic midrange toolbox.
The deck leverages "Fist" as a horizontal expansion engine, effectively turning Graveyard destruction into advantage. This allows for complex plays including the infamous "Amorphage Lock", robust Rank 7 plays, and one-card starters via Artillery Catapult Turtle.
Fist Armed Dragon can destroy a Dragon you control to revive itself from the GY. This converts low-value tokens or spent searchers into a Level 5 body with 2400 ATK, creating an "infinite" resource loop as long as you have fodder.
The "cost" of discarding cards for Fist Armed Dragon's field effect is actually a benefit. Discarding Armed Dragon Thunder LV3 draws a card, effectively making the powerful removal and summon effect of "Fist" card-neutral or even positive.
The 2025 standard utilizing Artillery Catapult Turtle to bridge directly into the "Fist Armed Dragon" engine.
Normal Summon Artillery Catapult Turtle. Tribute it to Special Summon Fist Armed Dragon directly from the Deck.
Activate Fist Armed Dragon's effect: Discard 1 card (preferably ADT LV3 to draw 1), then destroy an opponent's monster (< 2400 ATK) OR destroy itself/another Dragon to summon from Deck.
If you destroy a Level 4 Dragon with Fist's effect, you can Special Summon Amorphage Sloth (Level 6) from the Deck, locking your opponent out of the Extra Deck completely.
The classic endboard combines generic interaction with floodgate pressure.
Level 5 / WIND / Dragon
The heart of the old strategy. (1) Destroys a Dragon you control to revive itself from GY. (2) Discards a card to destroy a monster ( < 2400 ATK) and Special Summon a Dragon 2 Levels higher from Deck.
The 1-card starter. Tributes itself to Special Summon "Fist Armed Dragon" directly from the Deck, bypassing the need to draw it.
The floodgate. Summoned from Deck by destroying a Level 4 Dragon with "Fist". Prevents both players from Special Summoning from the Extra Deck.
Still the primary starter. Discarding it for "Fist" triggers a draw, maintaining hand advantage.
Essential extender. Can dump "Fist" to GY to start the recursion loop.
Mandatory searcher. Accesses any WIND Dragon and facilitates Rank 7 plays.
